Homemade Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Here is a recipe for Homemade Creamy Mashed Potatoes! These are so delicious and easy to make that you will never want to go back to Instant Mashed Potatoes. These creamy mashed potatoes are not very good for you sure due to the cream and butter, but you will LOVE them!

Ingredients for Creamy Mashed Potatoes:

  • 5-6 pounds of red potatoes
  • 1 ½ – 2 sticks of butter, cut into pieces
  • 1 ½ cups of Heavy Whipping cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste (meaning however much you would like)

Possible creative additions to your Creamy Mashed Potatoes

  • Crushed up bacon bits*
  • Chives*
  • Sour cream*
  • Shredded cheese

Prepare the potatoes:

Preparation time: 20 minutes

If you are keeping the peels (I recommend that because you get more nutrients out of the skin)
Scrub the outside of the potatoes with a scrub brush or a sponge and water – you want to get all the dirt off
If you do not like potato skins in your mashed potatoes
Use a veggie peeler to scrape the skins off, then rinse under water
Cut your potatoes up, they don’t need to be a specific size or even sized pieces but the smaller the chunks the faster they will cook
Place them in a large empty pot as you cut them up
Add water so that the potatoes are completely covered plus an extra inch, make sure the water level is not to high on the pot or it will boil over

Cook your potatoes:

Preparation time: 45 Minutes

Place your pot on the stove and turn heat to high
Cover until water is boiling
Remove the lid or the potatoes will boil over
Let boil for 45 minutes to an hour
Keep an eye on your water level, if it gets low add more hot water

Mix your mashed potatoes:

Preparation time: 10 Minutes

Turn of the heat to the stove and drain the potatoes in a strainer
While the potatoes are draining, add the butter to the pot
Pour the drained potatoes back into your pot
Use a potato masher and mash them well
Add the whipping cream and stir well (add as much cream as you want to get the consistency you want)
Taste test to see if you need to add salt and/pepper
If you want add bacon, chives or whatever else you want at this point
Taste again to check your flavors
Serve right away (I always make these last before we eat)

Order of Operations:

  • Prepare your potatoes
  • Boil the water
  • Drain
  • Mix all ingredients
  • Taste to check for flavor
  • Enjoy!

Important notes for you:

We like to use red potatoes due to the flavor, however you can use russet or yellow potatoes

How many potatoes you use is going to depend a lot on how many people you are feeding. Example: if just two of you are eating, I would only do 3-4 russet potatoes or 5-6 red potatoes. If you are feeding a bunch of people, I would do a 3 or even a 5 pound bag.

Heavy Whipping Cream – For extra creamy potatoes, use Heavy whipping cream, milk will be just fine though if that is what you have

Creative things you can add: Chives, garlic, bacon bits, shredded cheese, cream cheese, sour cream mmm yummy!
