Pork Spare Ribs Oven

This is a fantastic recipe for Pork Spare Ribs in the oven and then the grill. During the summer I can find very large racks of Pork Spare Ribs and when you cook them this way, they are juicy and flavorful!

Ingredients for Pork Spare Ribs:

Preparation: 10 Minutes

1 Rack Pork Spare Ribs
1 Tablespoon of salt
1 Tablespoons ground cumin
1 Medium red onion, grated
2 cloves of fresh garlic, grated
Your favorite BBQ sauce – use whatever kind and however much you would like

Precook the ribs:

Cook time: 3 hours

Preheat oven to 300 F
Prepare a large cookie sheet with a layer of aluminum foil
Place the ribs (bony side up first) on the cookie sheet
Mix the cumin, grated onion and grated garlic in a small bowl
Sprinkle ½ Tablespoon of salt directly on the ribs (bony side)
Treat the mixture as you would a rub and scrub 1/3 of the mixture gently all over the back of the ribs
Flip the ribs over so the meaty side is face up
Sprinkle the remaining ½ Tablespoon of salt all over the top
Scrub the rest of the mixture all over the meaty part of the ribs
Take another piece of aluminum foil and completely cover the ribs. Make sure to tuck the corners of the foil under the ribs so there is a nice pocket to keep all the moisture in.

Place the ribs in the oven on the middle rack for 3 hours

After the ribs are done:

Cook time: 20 Minutes

Fire up your grill!
Using a basting brush lightly coat the ribs with a thin layer of BBQ sauce (both sides)
Cook on the grill just long enough to sear the BBQ sauce on so that you get the nice sticky outer layer About 7-8 minutes per side
Continue to lather on BBQ as desired

Here is a set of silicon basting brushes that I recommend

Let the ribs rest:

Preparation time: 5 Minutes

Pull the ribs out and let them rest on a cutting board or the baking sheet you used to cook them for 5 minutes
Slide between the bones with a sharp knife
Serve some BBQ sauce on the side

Order of Operations:

Preheat your oven to 300 F
Prepare your ingredients
Scrub up our ribs!
Wrap them and bake for 3 hours
Place on grill and cook only to sear in the BBQ sauce
Let rest

Important notes for you:

Change the seasoning if you would like something different…sweet, spicy, savory anything will work with this

  1. Ummm.. this looks yum!
Thank you for sharing this mouth watering dish! It seems easy to do– no expertise needed,
    so… I think I can try this.

Just a question though, what can you use instead of oven? I know, it sounds crazy! But believe me, not everybody owns one.

    1. Good question Mina! You are always welcome to cook them straight on your grill with the same prep work. Seasonings, wrapped in tin foil and place on a cookie sheet directly on the grill. Let them cook on the grill at about 300 F for 45-60 minutes. After they are cooked through, take them out of the tin foil and sear them with the BBQ sauce. Should work perfectly! Other option would be to cut the rack in half, season and cook in a Crock-Pot for about 4 hours with about little beef or chicken broth in the bottom (about an inch deep with broth). If you try one of these other methods, let me know how it turns out for you! Good luck 🙂
