Want to try something a little lighter than red spaghetti sauce? Try this recipe for delicious homemade cream mushroom sauce. Pairs perfectly with spinach tortellini or egg noodles. Warm, comfort food that is easy and delicious.
Ingredients for Cream Mushroom Sauce:
2 Tablespoons of butter
8 Oz package of white or Baby Bella mushrooms, sliced
2 Cloves garlic, minced
2 Tablespoons white flour (or 1 Tablespoon of corn starch for my gluten free friends)
3/4 Cup of Chicken broth
1 1/4 Cup of half-and-half
1 Teaspoon of pepper
Kitchen Utensils needed:
Large skillet
Whisk or potato masher for stirring the sauce
Sharp knife for mincing garlic
Cutting board
Prepare for the meal:
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Mince the garlic
Wash the mushrooms
Slice the mushrooms if not already sliced
Prepare the mushroom cream sauce:
Preparation time: 25 minutes
Place skillet on the stove and turn to medium heat
Once the skillet is hot, add the butter to melt
Add the minced garlic and sauté until lightly browned (keep stirring the garlic or it will burn)
Add the sliced mushrooms and stir frequently, cook 5 minutes
While mushrooms are cooking add pepper
Sprinkle flour on the top of the mushrooms and stir until combined (the flour helps thicken the sauce)
Turn burner heat to high
Add chicken broth and bring to a boil
Simmer for about 3 minutes
Turn heat to medium/low
Slowly add half-and-half in and mix well
Stir frequently as the sauce thickens
If the sauce is too thick, add more chicken broth, if not thick enough add more half-and-half
Cook about 10 minutes
Taste as you go and add salt and pepper if needed
Ideas to add to the sauce:
This sauce is delicious as is, but feel free to add spicy Italian sausages, chicken, ground beef, or meatballs
